NAFLD is characterized by the accumulation of lipids, mainly triglycerides, in the hepatocytes of the liver parenchyma, which is responsible for the initiation of liver damage and persistent elevation of liver enzyme levels. To deal with fatty liver, lifestyle modification is necessary and most patients do not need drug treatment. Currently, there are no specific drugs to treat NAFLD, even though some drug molecules have shown beneficial effects. Many studies have reported that silymarin (an active ingredient in milk thistle), vitamin E, vitamin C, coenzyme Q10 and selenium can be effective in non-alcoholic fatty liver disease.
